romancing the world

sometimes i can hear the world breathing.

it's in the stillness, the act of doing nothing, that it hits like blast of train whistle and the mouth of the world smells of pretzels and salt and sweat and beer and coffee and tired and fast food,

like the exhaust of our veggie car

an exhausted world. it hits me at our bible study as we're huddled round everyone trying to un-hurry hearts for an hour to forget about suzy's cold and jimmy's grades and to know Him, by stilling.

but then it's rush of car and home and sleep and work and rats racing and there is no time for brushing teeth just go, go, go and

mary sits expectant

i sit excited for

the advent of this wreath, which ann's son has made

and for some reason this year, i cannot wait
for advent

yet i must
for it's in the waiting, the days leading up to conception, that romance happens

the wooing of a world gone weary

the roses of a suitor-God who comes in form of angel
says, behold
i love you
enough to give you life

we need this stilling, this knowing of a divine kind of romance for without it,
there would be no immaculate story, no savior in a manger, no God on a cross, no Christmas worth winter

and so, i wait
the coming of advent

Emily, this advent poem is exquisite...like the waiting mary...oh, if only we could keep the rush at bay and properly prepare for the nativity! One candle is lit now :) the first Sunday of Advent has come.

embracing and learning about Advent alongside my children ,
and still and more each year,
has completely changed how I view and process and give at Christmas (and by give , I don't mean just presents)

slow, intentional, reflective, surrender,

...the wooing of a world gone weary. These words gave me chills.

With the excesses of Christmas so common in the United States, Advent is often overlooked. We do need this stilling. I'm going to read my prayer book now.

no Christmas worth winter...i love that, Emily.
Again, thanks for sharing your gift. I'm so glad God gives you these words and images. They bless me!
With love!

This is so beautifully written Em. I am just resting in your words and in their depth and meaning.
Yes - the waiting - difficult but so worth it.
Praying for you today.

oh, i love it... "immaculate story"... "savior in a manger"... "God on a cross"... "Christmas worth winter". the words bring disbelieving tears and i am wrapped up in the romance. and we all wait, creation waits, for more...

I love this: how you can hardly even wait for the waiting! :-)

Waiting (sometimes impatiently) right here with you ...

(And eager for my own Caleb Voskamp original to show up on this Iowa doorstep!)

oh i love it emily ..un-hurry hearts.. yes - we have to - and it's so difficult - our god wooing for us - a godly love affair - so true and so good to be reminded

I, too, love how you said you can't wait for waiting! That is exactly how I see it it.

The lists, rush, bustle, packing, sickness, groceries, daily routines - ALL have to stop for a lighting of a candle and intentionally waiting.

I can't wait for it every day either!

I love this: "we need this stilling, this knowing of a divine kind of romance for without it,
there would be no immaculate story, no savior in a manger, no God on a cross, no Christmas worth winter"

Some of my sweetest moments have been sitting as an exhausted mother at the end of the day in candle light quietly shedding tears of relief to be able to sit in silence and wait. It transforms my heart every year.

In the stillness, in the waiting, in the centre of lifes extrordinary poetry. Eyes close, heart speaks, He answers.
Blessings for advent sweet friend.

Ah, the wonder and romance of God! I have tasted and savored, but still get caught much too easily in the busyness the world hopes to cram our souls with. Thank you for this reminder that it is in the waiting where romance thrives. I hear Him calling... Blessings. :)

I just came in from sitting and doing nothing. The wind was whispering in the trees. The rain was falling. Fog was over the lawn. And I felt the joy of doing nothing while the world moved stormy on.

(You picked my favorite stanza, btw, from the villanelle :)

Intriguing season- and romance-centered work. Excellent.

Soft spoken reminder for us all to take time to 'wait'. There's something about those moments of lighting a candle and reading words, that stills the world around me, and I remember exactly why we have Christmas.
