it's a fish fry here, oma and opa and cousin are over and the air smells of cumin and cut potatoes, sliced french, and the table's laid and we're all saying grace in our quiet family way
the sky let go, this weekend, clouds fell flat on earth, white drifting metres high and there's fluff in the walk, in the print on snowflake
we feel the snow in the wood heat, the reminder of winter as it evaporates and we hold hands and aiden giggles and we thank the God of fish and potato and we eat
five loads of laundry sit folded
five loaves of bread sit baked
five heads around the table bowed low in advent communion
and there is expectation in the quiet for we know what the coming weeks bring: rushed flight to ontario, sister's wedding to zambian man, staying on to love on mum then back, christmas eve, to a full slate of activities here and
then revisions to be made to my book (the publisher is pleased, wants more) and assignments to finish and
december has been hard.
i've been sad for the sacred gone missing
for the busy come rushing
for the crowded and the crazed and i'm hungry for the stillness of manger babe
so i stop.
and i'll stop until january. i'll stop and savor and scribble thoughts across brain instead of blog, and post pictures in heart instead of online, and i'll pray for you, dear readers, but i must stop.
the new year, soon here
and us, together again
communing, heads bent, over imperfect prose and daily breakings.
i love you.
Christ be born among us...

Oh, emily--that painting is gorgeous. And, yes, I will miss you too! But I will hold you in my heart until January blows in with her stiff winds and bright skies. Merry Christmas, my friend. You are a gift to me.

Grace and peace to you, friend. May you know the sweetness of Emmanuel--God with us--in the coming weeks. Looking forward to seeing you in the new year. So glad your publisher is pleased. Merry Christmas!
Dearest Emily, it has been like Christmas here every day--the gifts you bring to us are precious and holy. May your rest be full of the same! Be blessed in each moment, and know you are loved extravagantly by the King of all kings.
Until we "meet" again, much love.
Merry Christmas to you sweet friend. Enjoy your time with family:)
I'll probably just keep clicking over here regardless.
It's a place I need to come to.
Sending hope and love . Safe travels Em, and enjoy every gift of day.
Sounds so nice, Em. I'm half tempted... ;) Love to you and see you on the flip-side of this most beautiful season!
Love to you, too sweet Emily. I feel you, friend.
I will miss your words, they have a tapping, lively rhythm that is so YOU.
But. I. Understand.
Enjoy!
I know this -- the tilt-o-whirl that starts spinning at Thanksgiving and doesn't stop until January when we step off dizzy and discombobulated and a little nauseous. I think this is the first year I have made space for stillness. I hope you find yours.
I am such a fan of your writing. You really do move and inspire me, Emily.
Merry Christmas! xoxo
I can totally understand the need to stop...good for you, glad you can see your way to it.
Have a lovely Christmas and, as we smile and say in the USA, "see ya next year!"
We will miss you and await your return. Savor the moments.
Andie
Miss,
Poetry has a way with me as no other literary form. This poem is perfect!
Merry Christmas.
I think you have a good idea. Merry Christmas.
This is such a beautiful post--a nostalgic one to leave us with--we will miss you, sweet friend and pray that all of your comings and goings during the holidays will be blessed--
My dad used to always write little notes on napkins or baccalaureate programs or wherever he was--try to grab a napkin or two for your thoughts--your brain will never hold it all and even if it does, it will be so very hard to recapture--and we don't want to miss a thing that you experience while you are gone--we will be looking forward to you sharing it with us in the weeks ahead.
Love,
Dianne
Emily,
Good for you girl. Take that break and enjoy your time.
needed to read this today, friend. as always, your words stir. might just pull a copy-cat.
wishing you many quiet moments in the coming weeks. oh, to be pregnant at christmas ... how those early verses in Luke 2 read differently, somehow.
will continue to pray for your boys, your bean, and your book...
xoxo
praying for you & yours; hoping for a time of peace and refreshing & that you will enjoy the moments, each moment you are in...
many, many blessings dear friend as Christ is born among us :)
merry christmas dear emily! xo
You are so very wise. I need to follow and heed. I can't seem to let go, it seems, even when so much is at stake...like properly celebrating and worshipping Him. You set a very good example for me.
Blessings to you and yours this Christmas, friend.
P.S. Like the new look here. Fresh and clean. Hushed.
i will think of you every day while you're gone (over here, near me).
Merry Christmas ... you have made such a sweet home in your place here on the web. Looking forward to seeing your art and hearing more of your words in 2011.

The unselfish part of me is happy for you but the selfish part of me is thinking, "Rats!" ;-)
